Why do people have to categorize everything?

Americans are probably the worst offenders of this. No it's not rock n roll, it's pop, no it's not, it's hip hop, rock, acid rock , punk rock etc, girl rock, boy rock, kiddie rock, adult rock, adult contemporary, etc.. Jeeez..
